Shitbox Rally Starts Saturday

Posted by Easy Days at

JUST ONE WEEK

. . . to go and Gavin and Neal are set to bring a new element to the majestic scenery of New Zealand, as they join the inaugural international Shitbox Rally for New Zealand in February 2016, all in the ‘easy days’ Shitbox (dunger, lemon, dog, call it what you like).

Shitbox Rally NZ kicks off on February 13 from Auckland. Drivers will experience incredible scenery and a challenging variety of roads as they traverse the North Island (Te Ika-a-Maui) before returning to Auckland 7 days later. It will be the trip of a lifetime for 150 participants as they discover the real Middle-earth all while raising much-needed funds for critical cancer research programmes.

Each year, for the last six years in Australia, Shitbox Rally has seen teams come together not only to raise money in the fight against cancer, but to embark on an adventure exploring the vast and challenging continent. This year, New Zealand is in the Box Rallies family as Australian and New Zealand teams alike take to the roads. From farmlands to forests, geothermal wonders to glacial valleys, and imposing mountains to cosmopolitan cities – the North Island of NZ is the stuff of Tolkien legend.

“We are expecting a hell of a lot of fun, silliness, and adventure over the week as well as having to retain the need to be on our metal for this epic and arduous event! This along with being able to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause – the Cancer Society of NZ ” says Gavin.

It’s not only the extraordinary scenery that will greet the teams around every bend. Armed with gaffer tape, courage and a whole lot of creativity, it is a chance for participants to experience New Zealand in a unique way.

Teams will fly into Auckland the day before the rally begins to bid on the Shitbox car that will carry them through the rally. The cars, sourced by the Box Rallies team with Manheim, will be on show for the teams to view, but will not be available to test drive before the private auction. It’s the luck of the draw as the ‘money’ teams have to bid with is based on their fundraising total, so the more money they’ve raised the more chance they have to secure their ‘dream’ Shitbox. The teams will then have just 24 hours to get acquainted with and decorate their vehicle in true Shitbox-style before joining the rally convoy the following morning.

With Manheim sourcing the cars, teams can focus on what’s really important – the fundraising. After all, the rally is really a reward for all the fundraising the teams do in the lead up to the event. Participants must raise a minimum of $4,500 to qualify to be in Shitbox Rally NZ.

“We are well on the way to getting toward our target in terms of fundraising, BUT we are NOT there yet – and it isn’t too late to donate or become a sponsor – Contact Gavin or go to
